Workshop Summary
This workshop clarifies what Number Talks are and how they support mathematical thinking through brief, focused conversations about mental math. It explores a variety of K-3 prompts, how to facilitate meaningful discussions, and create a classroom culture where reasoning, flexibility, and confidence grow. Teachers will also examine how to plan and select problems that encourage sense-making and productive talk related to counting, addition, subtraction, and multiplication strategies.
The Outcome:
- Define the components a Number Talk and how it differs from other math discussions
- Understand a variety of prompts and how to appropriately select problems
- Recognize how Number Talks promote fluency, equity, and classroom discourse
- Know how to plan and facilitate Number Talks that highlight student thinking and support reasoning and flexibility
